The Triangle Birdwing Butterfly (Trogonoptera trojana) is found only in Palawan in the Phillippines. Birdwing butterflies are so called because of the shape and size of their wings, coupled with the consequent bird-like characteristics of their flight; the Triangle Birdwing has a wingspan of around 18 centimetres (7 inches). The scale and beauty of these exotic creatures made them highly prized by butterfly collectors, which is why they are now protected species and trade in them is banned. However, it is still possible to bring the beauty of these amazing tropical butterflies into your home in the form of Bronte Porcelain’s amazing butterfly jewellery box.
Like everything we make, the starting point is to cast the jewellery box in fine bone china, fire it in the kiln, add a layer of glaze and fire it once more before the artist begins the painstaking work of decorating the lid of the box. In order to capture the translucence and iridescence of the gossamer wings of the butterflies on a solid piece of porcelain, the artist uses not only standard ceramic pigments but metallic paints and lustres, building the image up stage by stage and returning the box cover to the kiln after each application. The end result is worth the effort; the ephemeral beauty of this delicate, exotic creature perfectly captured in colours that will never fade, but will continue to bring pleasure and admiration for many years to come.
