This dramatic, jet black vase with its stylised decoration in subtle shades of gold, and the beautiful pair of ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding from trumpet lilies, would stand out in any setting. Combining a variety of highly specialised techniques, it demonstrates to superb effect the talents and abilities of Bronte’s artists and craftspeople.
To begin with, the imposing cylindrical Hanley Vase is cast in fine bone china, with the liquid clay, or slip, from which it is made stained black. When the vase is then glazed and fired, the result is a smooth, flawless ebony body; the canvas on which the artist will set to work.
The design is created using both traditional and new decorative techniques: raised paste is combined with two shades of gold to create an exquisite, two-tone relief effect, while ceramic pigments are built up to bring the foliage, the trumpet lilies and the exotic hummingbirds to glowing life, the male bird’s ruby red throat creating a splash of vivid colour. After each process the vase is returned to the kiln for a further firing, until finally the 22 carat gold band is applied to its rim as the finishing touch. Our artist can also add a hand-painted inscription to the base of the vase.
The vase is supplied with a mahogany plinth and comes in a hand-made, silk-lined presentation box. While it would look magnificent on its own, we also offer the perfect partner to create a pair of vases, in the Purple Throated Hummingbirds Hanley Vase
