Modelling & Mould Making

Every ceramic item - whether a plaque, a vase or a sculpture - begins its life as an original model created by a specialist sculptor or model maker, usually crafted from clay or plaster of Paris. From this model, a skilled craftsman known as a blocker creates the master moulds, or ‘blocks’, from which the first ceramic pieces will be cast. A single item may require several moulds, and the blocker may need to cut the original model into pieces to create them. From these master blocks the working moulds will be produced, capturing and reproducing every detail of the original model in production.
