Gilding

The finishing touch for many pieces of Bronte Porcelain is the application of precious metals – gold, silver or platinum – which are a vital part of the decoration, adding shimmering highlights and picking out details of the design. The metals are suspended in a special solution so that the gilder can carefully paint them onto the surface. This solution fires away, leaving a thin layer of gold, silver or platinum on the ceramic piece. As with painting, more than one gilding application may be needed to achieve the desired effect, and the piece must be fired at over 700 degrees Celsius after each one.
