When the ceramic piece is removed from the kiln after its final firing, the gilded details will have a dull appearance, and it is the job of the burnisher to give the finished product its shine. First, a wet chamois leather is used to rub fine silver sand onto the gilded surface, and a dry chamois leather is then used to buff it to a shine. Last of all, an agate or bloodstone can be used to chase the gilded areas, producing a brilliant, mirrored finish.
